Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS)

This year we are celebrating 25 years of the Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS). We look forward to this momentous occasion highlighting many of our scholar’s accomplishments. We will also welcome new scholars who will begin a new chapter of this story as we jointly walk the path…To Train. To Mentor. To Inspire.

LANS is a national networking conference which offers skill building, networking and professional development opportunities tailored to the training needs undergraduates at our annual Research Conference to include a Career Development Workshop tailored for graduate students, and doctoral scholars (SR-EIP alumni who have completed a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. degree).  We also offer faculty the opportunity to participate in a Grant Writing Coaching Group, which provides investigators with tailored support that aligns with their current state of professional development.

The LANS Career Development Workshop is an opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to learn more about potential career paths, build their professional network,  and apply practical advice to the next phase of their careers. Participants can expect to leave this workshop with:

  • A professional development plan
  • An expanded professional network of peers and mentors
  • Tools to market themselves to potential employers
  • Advice to improve their resumes or CVs

What to Expect

The workshop will feature TLA Talks, brief presentations focusing on a variety of career pathways. In addition to the speakers, Professional Career Mentors will be invited to share their experiences and provide career advice for participants. Speakers and Professional Career mentors will represent a variety of professions including:

  • Academia
  • Consulting
  • Government and Policy
  • Higher Education Administration
  • Industry
  • Non-profit

The Leadership Alliance will cover travel (up to $500) and hotel (room & tax only) for all attendees. For more information, visit the reimbursement policy page.

The Leadership Alliance Faculty Grant Writing Coaching Groups

The grant writing coaching groups will connect you with faculty across the Leadership Alliance network. It will include a kickoff of intensive grant writing groups led by assigned faculty coaches with whom you will continue to meet after the conference through virtual meetings. The faculty grant writing coaching groups are a collaborative effort of the Leadership Alliance with Dr. Rick McGee and the Big Ten Academic Alliance, Committee on Institutional Cooperation Academic Network.  The Leadership Alliance will cover your travel and hotel expenses.

Research Conference

This year we are celebrating 25 years of our National Symposium. The inaugural symposium took place at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on July 6-8, 1995. We look forward to celebrating with our entire community of family and friends.

As always the LANS Research Conference will continue to offer ongoing professional development, mentoring and networking among the Alliance family of undergraduates, graduate students, our doctoral scholars, faculty, and administrators.
